Matt
Singer went over the minutes of the last board meeting, which was
held on August 3rd, 2004. Highlights covered of that August meeting
were:
- Approving
Odell Anderson’s expenses to attend 2004 National in Indiana
for $395.75
- Membership
as of 8-3-04 was 152
- National
membership database and Wisconsin membership database are now
in synch due to organizational changes for the better at the national
level.
- WI
member Larry Severeid is doing a 5 year study on stem deformity,
using a $5,000 grant from the USFS.
- Odell
Anderson is pursuing insurance options for the Board and WWC field
days since National canceled state’s coverage.
Treasurer’s
Report covered by Russ Moody, on file. Net worth as of 10-23-04
is $3,973.32. Expect about $1,500 to $1,700 in income as members
renew and new members join (WI membership fee is $10.00).
Committee
Reports:
Membership (Dan
Bohlin): 165 current members. 27 new for 2004, 16 did not renew
for a net gain of 11 members over 2003.
Tree Improvement
(Larry Severeid): Discussed his 5-year stem deformity study. $5,000
grant from USFS to be matched with hours/time, not money.
Madison Winter
Membership Meeting and Conference (Matt Singer): Will be co-sponsored
with WWOA on Saturday, February 26th at the American Family Insurance
Building in Madison. WWC membership meeting will be from 8 am to
9 am prior to the conference.
Nominating committee:
WWC had four
vacancies to fill: Ron Jervis (term expired), Russ Moody (term expired),
Ed Soleska (resigned from board earlier in the year), and Mike Pfanku
(resigned from board earlier in the year).
Secretary Matt
Singer found 3 capable and willing applicants for the 4 vacant board
positions: retired DNR Forester Jim Widder, DNR Forester Jason Sable,
and Larry Severeid (advisor to WWC). Jim, Jason and Larry introduce
themselves and told why they want to be considered for the board.
Voice vote was unanimous in confirming the three new members.
This means the
board has 7 members for year 2005.: 4 already serving: Matt Singer,
Odell Anderson, Dan Bohlin, John Ouellette and 3 new members: Jim
Widder, Jason Sable, Larry Severeid.
Old
Business:
Liability Insurance
for the Board and for WWC field days: Russ Moody said the insurance
would be around $350 for each field day/event, not to include the
general liability incurred by board members. Russ said president
Odell Anderson is going to the National meeting in Indiana the first
week in November and see what progress National is making toward
getting us insured again. Matt Singer and Russ Moody emphasized
that this action is NUMBER 1 PRIORITY for Odell and the board this
fall.
New
Business:
Suggestions
for field days from the members in attendance included:
- Fall
field day at Dan Bohlin’s woods to emphasize invasives and
perhaps be lucky enough to do a small burn that day.
- Marketing
spring field day near LaCrosse to see the overseas log shipping
process and to get a sense as to how landowners can market their
logs to the overseas buyers.
- Spring
field day to emphasize the acrobasis insect, which causes stem
deformity. Also to look at older mixed walnut/conifer plantings.
- Fall
field day at Al Goetch’s and to maybe incorporate a time
of nut picking.
A suggestion
came from the membership to remind National that we want our state
dues of $10.00 per member and we do not want to donate it to National.
Motion was made,
2nd, and passed to give Jim Schiller a free one year membership
to the Walnut Council. Mr. Schiller was the owner of the woods in
Green County where the fall field day had just been.
Matt Singer
presented walnut clock/plaque to retiring board members Russ Moody
(6 years on board, treasurer, from 1999 through 2004) and absent
Ron Jervis (3 years on the board from 2001-2004, 1 year president,
1 year vice president).
Meeting adjourned
at 5:00 pm.
Door prizes
were then handed out: 3 walnut letter openers carved by Odell Anderson,
2 American Chestnut seed packages put together by Larry Severeid,
and some local spirits that were brewed locally.
Albert Deppeler,
sawmill owner and woodcarver from Monroe had donated a walnut magazine
rack and walnut footstool. These were auctioned off and brought
$75 and $40 respectively, to be put into the coffers of WWC.
25 WWC members
then ate their fill.
Respectfully
Submitted,
Matt Singer-WWC Secretary
