January 9, 2007 9:00 a.m.

Call to order: Dan Bohlin called the meeting to order. The board welcomed Hans Morsbach as a newly elected board member.

Treasurer's Report: It was discussed that currently the spending is twice the revenue. The major expense was the national meeting in Nebraska and the WWOA ad problems. It was noted the next national meeting is in Dubuque, so costs will be less. Some ways to save money were brought up including mailings and targeting membership with personal contacts.

John Ouellette is going to check into dues distribution to the states and insurance with Liz Jackson.

Net Worth as of December 31, 2006 was $3,889.48

Committee Reports:

Tree and Nut Improvement:

Acrobasis Study

Larry Severeid gave an overview of the acrobasis study involving 3 sites and reported no acrobasis present at this time. The site in Iowa is growing the best and the site near Muscoda has rabbit damage to the seedlings.

Grafted Butternut

There were 30 trees planted, inoculated in 3 years for resistance, if there is any resistance they will be part of a seed orchard.

Chestnut

Back Cross techniques are being used to improve resistance to the chestnut blight.

The Chestnut Foundation will supply final backcross seed source. There will be seed from 120 final trees

The Hardwood Improvement Center and the DNR are researching an elite walnut planting to be put at Odell Anderson's property. There will also be some Pennsylvania Black Cherry planted to see if it might be genetics rather than the site related to their better quality.

Website

Alan Rault gave a summary of the website activities. Continued updates to the website. He is always looking for new ideas as well as better ways to grab people at the initial page. He will be looking for comments on each page from board members.

Exhibit

Bill Carlson and Jason Sable said the display continues to be available for anyone wanting to use it for outreach. An effort to update some of the photos will be made.

Membership

Dan Bohlin led the update. It was noted that the membership application needs to have the president's name and contact information updated to reflect the new president. The idea of perks for new members was brought up and people were asked to think about it. Dan Bohlin was willing to continue as the membership committee chair. There was discussion on Missouri adding 38 new members.

Public Relations

Ingrid Olson briefed the group on recent PR activities. She has contacted the Country Today newspaper and they will be looking at our website for information to publish on upcoming woodland events and workshops as well as other information that might be relevant for their readers. It was mentioned that they have a bi-weekly page dedicated to forestry available for articles. It was also decided to have a display at the Tri-State Forestry Conference March 10.

Old Business

Larry Severeid brought up the National Meeting for Wisconsin. There are 13 states with Walnut Council Chapters and only 6 of them with the resources and ability to host a national meeting. It appears Wisconsin will be hosting the National Meeting in 2011 or possibly 2010. The best site for this would probably be Madison for facilities and will be an Academic Seminar year for the meeting. Larry will talk further will Bill Carlson and Jason Sable regarding possible topics, speakers, and current research. Hardwood regeneration problems may be a good topic.

Bob Wieland noted that the SE portion of the state is lacking representation of members. The idea of a mentoring program for new landowners came out of this discussion.

Alan Rault volunteered to help with more committees if needed.

The board agreed to set up a display at the Madison Area Woodland Owners Conference in September. Dan Bohlin will take the lead on the display.
