The fall meeting is a two-day event with the first day dedicated to presentations that are relevant to Wisconsin’s forest health and quality. The second day will feature two tree farms that have co-operative research plots with the U. S. Forest Service, The American Chestnut Foundation and the Purdue Hardwood Tree Improvement Center.
Attendees may attend one or both days of the meeting.

Our guest lecturers, Jim Mc Kenna, Mike Ostry, Lenny Farlee, Manfred Mielke and Glen Stanosz will be present at the field day to participate in the discussions and answer questions.
MORNING SESSION – ROCKLAND TREE FARM
8:30 – 9:30 – Registration
9:30 – 9:45 – Introduction and Over-view. Larry Severeid
9:45 – 12:15 – FIELD DAY TOUR WILL INCLUDE:
· A tour of the research orchard of grafted butternut trees selected for potential resistance and backcrossed American chestnut trees that hopefully will show resistance to the chestnut blight. (The grafted butternut trees were obtained from the U S Forest Service and the Purdue Hardwood Tree Improvement and Regeneration Center. The American Chestnut Foundation furnished select chestnut seed and pollen.)
· A tour of the mixed hardwood plantings of oak, black walnut and chestnut trees. Topics such as species selection, spacing and thinning will be discussed.
· A tour of the high density, “controlled” direct seeded mixed plantings. The rationale for such a technique will be discussed.

AFTERNOON SESSION – LEON TREE FARM

2:00 – 3:30 – THE FIELD DAY TOUR WILL INCLUDE:
· A tour of the elite hardwood tree planting. This co-operative study between the WI DNR and the Purdue Hard Wood Tree Improvement Center is established to study the growth characteristics and quality of these selected red oak, black walnut and black cherry trees in our northern hardwood range. Wisconsin walnut seedlings and local seed were also planted on the site.
· A tour of the BC3 F2 chestnut orchard. When these trees begin to produce seed and cross-pollinate, their off-spring should have the wood characteristics of the American chestnut tree with the genes of the Chinese chestnut necessary for resistance to the Cryphonectria fungus.
· An opportunity to compare our native Wisconsin black walnut trees with the patented “Purdue” # 1 trees that were planted by Odell in 1990.

Stoney Creek Inn’s address is 3060 S. Kinney Coulee Rd. The Hotel is just off of I-90. Take the HWY 16 exit. Turn south (west) on 16. Kinney Coulee Rd is the first street after exiting I-90 on highway 16. There is a Kwik Trip on the corner. Turn left and just around the bend is Stoney Creek Inn.
CIATTI”S RESTAURANT, from Stoney Creek Inn
Ciatti’s restaurant is 5 minutes from the Stoney Creek Inn. On S. Kinney, turn left (west) onto highway 16. At the third “light” (including Kinney), turn right on Braund street. Ciatti”s is on the left side of the street. Turn left into the parking lot.
STONEY CREEK INN TO ROCKLAND TREE FARM Take highway 16 east for 19.5 miles to County trunk J. Turn right on County trunk J and go on J for 1.9 miles to Jackpot Ave. Turn left on Jack pot Ave. (it is just beyond the I-90 overpass). Go for 2 miles on Jackpot and turn right on Jackson. Go for .2 mile. Turn right onto the gravel lane. (one mail box and 3 fire signs) Go for .2 mile and turn left befor driving into the neighbors yard. There will be directional signs.
ROCKLAND TREE FARM
The easiest way to get to the tree farm from La Crosse is from highway 16, but for persons driving from the east on I-90, take the highway 27 exit at Sparta.
From Sparta I-90 Turn South (left) onto highway 27. Turn right on Jackpot Ave which is the first road you will come to. Stay on Jackpot Ave for 2.7miles. Turn left onto Jackson. Go .2 mile and turn right onto the gravel lane. (there is a mail box and 3 fire # signs) Go .2 mile and take a left just before entering the neighbor’s driveway.
From La Crosse take highway 16. Refer to Stoney Creek Inn directions.
ROCKLAND TREE FARM TO LEON TREE FARM – When exiting, turn left onto Jackson. Turn RIGHT (Not left) onto Jackpot ave. Continue on Jackpot Ave to Highway 27 (2.7mi). Turn right onto highway 27 and go to county trunk J (2.3 mi). Turn right onto county trunk J and continue on J for 5 miles. Veer to the left onto Mallard. (Do not continue on J) Go 1 mile and you are at the Leon tree farm. There will be parking directions.
LEON TREE FARM
From I-90, highway 16 – Turn south onto highway 27. Continue on 27 until Co Trunk J. Turn right onto Co Trunk J. Follow instruction to the farm by referring to directions from Rockland Tree Farm.
From highway 14 and 61 turn onto Highway 27 Take 27 to Sparta and turn left onto Co Trunk J. Refer to the directions on Rockland tree farm to Leon tree farm.
